FCC Requires Firewire port on HD Cable Boxes

Filed under: From Digg — jimX @ 9:34 pm

From Digg:

Reading on the MythTV board

http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/150079?page=unread#unread

that there is a requirement from the FCC for Cable operators as of April 1, 2004 to have WORKING Firewire ports (76.701 section 4(ii))

And HMI or DVI ports by July 1, 2005.

This is a major step forward for the free (as in speech) movement. I was planning a mythbox and this is just in time. The box I was thinking of using (the one I’m typing this on now) Has 2 Firewire ports; one on the back that has the “traditional” connector, and another on the front that has the propriotary Sony i-link interface. (Why do companies have an urge to name things with an “i” in the front?) So now I probably won’t have to buy a Tuner Card!! w00t!! and now I don’t even have to screw around with a cable card or anything!! hehehe I’m starting to not hate the FCC as much. For once they’re actually working for the customer anstead of for the copyright holder. We should implement a Viewerright legislation!!!

MS To Offer Vista For Free?

Filed under: From Digg — jimX @ 4:41 pm

From Digg:

Brian Proffitt of Linux Today speculates ‘It is my suspicion that Windows Vista will be free.’ going on to comment ‘If they [Microsoft] do this, and I think it quite possible, they would certainly offer it as a free upgrade for those already using Windows XP or below.

That would be cool… but Free (as in beer) DRM is Still DRM.

General Generalness

Filed under: Blog, School, Random, Tech — jimX @ 3:57 pm

Update (Kill the Cats! The Familiars of The Devil!): The Pluage was not fun. I think I’m over it now… but next year I’m thinking of wearing a Biohazard Suit for the first half of the year.

Random Thought: *is sad* the little clip on my USB Thumbdrive just fell off. Now the only useful feature of the thing is that it holds 256MB of data.

Update (School): I think I know my way around… still gotta follow someone from Spanish class (2nd period) to Social Studies (3rd Period)

Request (Blog): anyone know how to get my moblog script to run in the sidebar of wordpress?
These two bits of code should help:

<embed wmode=”transparent” src=”http://nerdzilla.textamerica.com/Flash/FlashPanel-002.swf?reload=46236.1485069″ FlashVars=”UserID=455478&url=http://nerdzilla.textamerica.com/flasherXML.aspx?refresh=455478″ menu=”false” quality=”high” pluginspage=”http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/index.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” width=”120″ height=”160″>
</embed>

<script language=”javascript” type=”text/javascript” src=”http://nerdzilla.textamerica.com/flasher.aspx?refresh=455478″></script>

Current Projects:
I’m downloading *looks at router* I just finished downlaoding a HD Windows media Player File With DRM on it… will it work in Kaffeine? I’m going to find out soon.

UPDATE (11:45PM): No… it didnt work. But I had 2 other files without DRM and only one of them worked. Somthing with The MPlayer code maybe?

School:
I Signed Up For the “Community Action Program”… I need the Community Service hours to graduate. I signed up during lunch yesterday, and I was handed a list of activites that were sanctioned by the school and recognised as community service. I need to do two or three to have “competed” the function. I think I’m going to Setup Christmas Lights for this one children’s hospitol charity, Do the babysitting thing for the PTA meetings at Sunrise (an elementry school), and Talk to the 5th Graders about Middle School. They seem simple… and I get to Play with electricity *twitch*, Gain Baysitting Experience (think 2 Rolls of Duct Tape will be enough?), and Influence the Young minds of the nation (VIVA LA REVOLUTION!). This is going to be interesting. hehehe.
