Filed under: Random, Tech — jimX @ 6:18 pm Edit This

I did it again… a whole month without updates.

Well, I’ve decided to jump the sinking ship… I’m gonna try to dump microsoft.
I’m wiriting this on SuSe 10.0 in Firefox, listening to my music in Kaffeine, and workign on a new version of Xugle in Bluefish (hopefully this will be easier to maintain).

I got some pretty nice things for christmas… some DVDs, Record player (yes, they still make them), and “The Art of Intrusion” By Kevin Mitnick.

hopefully I’ll keep this more up to date now.

Happy New Year

Ok… So I skipped a few updates…

ok, so yesterday, the dude helping me with my Computer troubles sent me this:

Jim -

I think the e-mail that I sent on the 21st was actually referencing the e-mail from the 19th, sorry for the confusion. Also, sorry to hear that the repair install did not work on the new system. Unfortunately, I am not surprised. The steps you are trying are not actually a supported scenario. The problem that is occuring is probably due to the difference in chipsets between the Sony and the new computer. When Windows was initially installed it setup the drivers for the Sony chipset and doing a repair install does not replace those drivers. It just reinstalls the drivers it thinks it needs. In order to get this to work it looks like it is going to take performing a clean install on the new system. So, if you want to use the drive from the Sony, you will need to back-up your data and then format and reinstall the OS. The other option is to pick up another hard drive for the new computer and do the clean install on it. The Sony hard drive could then be installed as a secondary drive in the new computer. Let me know how you would like to proceed.

Didn’t I tell him that it was the chipset?! *sigh* oh well.

I plan another Fax to Steeve Balmer, (I shall compliment “Helpful Guy” in said fax) and yet again complain about the lack of thought that was put into Windows XP.

On an unrelated note, The Feds May Let Big Telecom Hijack The Internet. Who the hell comes up with this? This is going on my “If this gets enacted, someone will pay severly” list, along with the broadcast flag and Anti-fair use legislation. By the looks of who will be speeking, this will be hard to fight… Microsoft, Earthlink, SBC, VZW. Who wants to build the Internet 2.5?! All-Optical, TCP/IPv6, Privately Owned — but Open.

Someone send me a couple reams of paper… I need more to finish my chitlist

The Adventures of Jim and Windows XP

Filed under: Rants, Tech — jimX @ 8:44 pm Edit This

Mr. Steve Ballmer
CEO of Microsoft Inc.

Mr. Ballmer:

On Tuesday October 4th, I contacted Microsoft’s technical support about an issue that has yet to be resolved… I recently built a new computer with the hopes of transplanting my hard drive into the new system. I did so, and the lack of flexibility that Microsoft so kindly included with Windows XP Home Edition causes it to Give me the safe mode prompt, with each option including (my personal favorite) the Blue Screen of Death with side of automatic system restart.

Contacting several companies about this problem, including Microsoft and Gigabyte (the manufacturer of my motherboard, the GA-K8n Pro-SLI) all I received was finger pointing and senseless answers such as something along the lines of “You must download and install the chipset drivers for your new motherboard while using that motherboard. After that, windows should start.” As this answer has a circular dependency, I cannot follow through with it. Another potential solution was to reformat my hard drive and re-install windows. How acceptable does this sound to you, Mr. Ballmer? Would you be willing to nuke your hard drive and start over at the drop of a hat?

The lack of general knowledge of computer systems and the windows operating system that your technical support group possesses amazes me. How could one person possibly be trained to know every in and out of the windows operating system!?! The simple answer is that they cannot. I highly suggest having an unannounced internal tech support audit. Microsoft needs it. Badly.

Finally, I wish to inform you that this is the final nail in my Windows-Use Coffin. Linux is looking extremely favorable, as I have had only three kernel panics EVER. However, I lost count of BSoDi in 1996. With the recent announcement that Quake 4 will be released for Linux, and the modification that allows Doom 3 to be played on Unix-Like operating systems. Also, I would like to inform you that this was typed on Open Office.org Version 1.1.5 on Kubuntu Linux, and printed through the Common Unix Printing System (CUPS)

I hope this Fax will cause action to be taken to improve your product’s flexibility and tech support quality for the cult-like following that windows will have when it is considered an alternative operating system (remember OS/2?)

This was the angry Fax that I sent to Steve Ballmer after I had been p/oed enough bu the crappy tech support I reveived. The Next day, while I was at school, a certified Microsoft Web Administrator/Tech Support Guy called my house. My mom told him to call back later, so he emailed me an introduction and told me that he had taken up my case, and would call me around 3:15 to help. When the called, I could immidiately tell that this was not some indian-hick that was pulled of the streets of Bombay and given a 3 week crash-course. I explained that my system wouldn’t boot into windows in the new machine, and he replied that it was an anti-pirating measure, so people can’t install windows on one hard drive and then dd it to hundereds of other drives. To get around this I would need a non-OEM copy of windows, so I could perform a “repair” install… which basically re-generates the Registry.

Being the cheapskate that I am, I tried looking in the usual places, miscilaneous torrent sites, P2P networks, etc. for a cracked copy. No dice. The next day, at wal-mart, I asked about a copy of Windows XP Home… the guy pulled out a copy of the UPGRADE disk, which is for people running Copies of Windows in the 95 Family, and tried to pass it off as the Full copy. That basterd.

Tomorrow I have a school sponsored community service project (putting up christmas lights) that I have to complete (or I don’t graduate in 2010) and after that I’m going to get a copy of XP Home and then it’s going to be DOOM TIME!!

Tech Support 2 & Random Bits

Filed under: Random, Tech — jimX @ 5:37 pm Edit This

Ok

Here’s the current status of my new computer:

- Hardware came
- All the hardware is good, except for a messed up front panel on the case
- Temoprary OS installed

Now, Here’s my second rant about tech support:

You know what pisses me off? Tech support that points the finger at another company.

I tried to transplant my Hard drive from my Sony PC to my new one. The drive and OS are both known-good, but for some reason, when I boot the computer, I get the “Safe Mode/Safe mode with command prompt/Safe Mode with Networking/ Start Windows Normally/Start with last known good configuration” prompt. No matter what option I choose, I get a BSoD and the system restarts. Repeat Cylce. I thought this was a job for tech supprt… so I started a text chat with a Microsoft Rep.

Summary of Microsoft Log:

Me: I’m having a problem with my copy of windows… *explains situation*
Indian Dude: Yes. I’ve heard of this one… lemme check my computer help file
Me: *sigh*
Indian: You must reformat your hard drive and start over.
Me: heh. How about… F NO!
Indian: Then you must use the System Restore disks and repair the installation
Me: It’s not broken.
Indian: If you’re calling this number, it must be.
Me: uhhhh… huh. *closes window*

Today, I called Gigabyte’s non-toll free Tech saupport number. I was on Hold for 15 minutes only to get the bogus answer of “You must boot the computer into windows on the GA-K8N Pro-SLI and install the chipset drivers before you can boot windows.” — gee. thanks.

Now I’m stuck with $600 worth of components that sorta work.

I’m going to get Microsoft back on the Line for the $35 Tech support and then if I dont get a resolution, I’ll tell my parents to refute the credit card charge. (No Goods/Services, No Cash)

gah. I’ll get this working. Hopefully I’ll get to headbutt/kick someone before this works ^_^

-jX is now officcially pissed
